EDC Knife Blade Coatings Explained: Black Oxide, DLC, and Cerakote

Bare steel is reactive. Even the most corrosion-resistant stainless blade will eventually show spotting or staining if it sits damp long enough, and carbon steels can flash-rust overnight in humid air. Coatings exist to buy the blade time, cut glare, or add a bit of surface lubricity — but no coating is armor plating, and each one comes with its own set of compromises. Here’s what the common options actually do.

Black Oxide: cheap, thin, and mostly cosmetic protection

Black oxide (sometimes called gun bluing when done chemically rather than electrochemically) is a conversion coating — it reacts with the surface of the steel itself rather than sitting on top of it like paint. That makes it extremely thin, which is why it doesn’t dull an edge or add measurable thickness to a blade. The tradeoff is that thinness offers only mild corrosion resistance and almost no abrasion resistance. It’s more of a light rust deterrent and a way to kill reflective glare than a true protective layer. Once the surface gets scratched through use, bare steel is exposed again in that spot, and black oxide doesn’t “heal” the way some coatings partially can. It’s inexpensive to apply, which is why you see it on budget fixed blades and tools, but it’s not what you’d choose for a knife headed into salt air or heavy daily abuse.

DLC (diamond-like carbon): hard, slick, and genuinely tough

DLC is an amorphous carbon coating applied through a vacuum deposition process, and it’s a different animal entirely from black oxide. It’s extremely hard — often in the same range as fine ceramics — which gives it real resistance to scratching and wear. It also has a naturally low coefficient of friction, so blades with a good DLC finish tend to glide through cardboard, rope, and other cutting materials with noticeably less drag than a bare or painted blade. Corrosion resistance is solid as long as the coating stays intact, since it forms a genuine physical barrier over the steel rather than reacting with it. The catch is that DLC is a coating in the truest sense: it’s deposited on top of the steel, and if it’s chipped or worn through — usually at the edge itself, since sharpening removes it there first — the exposed steel underneath is on its own. High-quality DLC is also more expensive to apply correctly, which is reflected in where you typically see it: mid-to-premium production and custom knives rather than budget lines.

Cerakote and other ceramic-based coatings: built for corrosion resistance

Cerakote is a ceramic-polymer composite originally developed for firearms, and it’s found its way onto knife blades for the same reason: it’s very good at sealing steel away from moisture and airborne salt. It’s applied as a thin sprayed layer and cured, which means it can be finished in a wide range of colors and finishes — useful for anyone wanting to cut down on reflective glare in the field. Its corrosion resistance is excellent, arguably the best of the common coating types for pure rust prevention, which is part of why it shows up on knives marketed for coastal, marine, or wet-environment use. It’s softer than DLC, though, and more prone to scuffing and wearing off at contact points like the spine and edge bevel with regular use. It’s also a coating that a user can realistically strip and reapply at home with the right prep, unlike DLC, which requires the same vacuum deposition equipment used to apply it originally.

Matching the coating to the environment

None of these coatings change what’s happening at the actual cutting edge once you sharpen — the apex nearly always ends up as bare exposed steel regardless of what covers the rest of the blade, since sharpening stones remove any coating in that zone. That means the base steel’s own corrosion resistance still matters even on a coated knife. Think of a coating as protecting the broad flats of the blade from the environment and from scuffing, not as a substitute for choosing steel appropriate to your climate and use case. A carbon steel blade with a tough coating and a diligent oiling habit at the edge will still outperform a coating chosen purely for looks with no maintenance behind it.
