Dishwasher detergent is abrasive and corrosive — it micro-pits the edge. The heat cycles can warp handles and loosen rivets. And knives banging against other items? Instant edge damage. Hand wash + immediate dry = 5 extra seconds, years more life.
Honing (with a rod) realigns a bent edge — no metal is removed. Do it weekly. Sharpening (with a stone) removes metal to create a new edge. Do it every 3–6 months. Honing does NOT replace sharpening — it just delays it.
