Batoning, Feathering, and Notching: Core Bushcraft Cuts Explained
Most bushcraft skill with a knife comes down to three techniques, and they ask completely different things of both the blade and the person using it. Batoning applies raw force, feathering demands fine control, and notching requires precision. A good bushcraft knife has to be reasonably competent at all three, which is why the skills are worth understanding on their own terms.
Batoning
Batoning is splitting wood by striking the spine of a fixed blade with a second piece of wood, a baton, driving the edge through a round of wood without an axe or saw. The technique works best on straight-grained wood free of knots; you set the edge into the end grain, then strike the spine in controlled blows, working the blade deeper until the round splits. Good practice keeps hands well clear of the strike zone and works the blade progressively rather than trying to split a large round in one pass. It’s the most force-intensive of the three techniques, which is why spine thickness and full-tang construction matter more here than in any other bushcraft cut.
Feathering
A feather stick is made by shaving thin, curling strips into a piece of wood while leaving them attached at the base, creating a cluster of fine, dry material that catches a spark or small flame far more easily than a solid stick would. This matters most in damp conditions, since the outer layers of a stick can be wet while the wood just beneath is dry, and shaving down to that drier layer exposes fuel that will actually light. The technique depends on control rather than force: consistent, shallow strokes at a steady angle, using the last section of the blade near the tip. A very sharp edge and a comfortable, secure grip matter more here than blade thickness.
Notching
Notching covers the family of precise cuts used in shelter building and trap construction, things like a simple pot-hanger notch for a cooking tripod, lashing notches that keep cordage from slipping on a shelter frame, or the trigger notches used in something like a figure-four deadfall trap. These cuts rely on controlled stop cuts, cutting to a defined depth from two directions and popping out the waste material, rather than on power. Precision here matters more than sharpness alone; a notch cut slightly wrong can mean a trap that won’t trigger or a shelter joint that won’t hold weight.
Why All Three Matter Together
Batoning tests how much abuse the blade and tang can take, feathering tests edge geometry and how finely the knife can be controlled, and notching tests whether the user can apply the blade with real accuracy. A knife that only excels at one of these, thick and tough but hard to control finely, or razor-thin but fragile under a baton strike, will always feel like a compromise in the field. That balance, more than any single spec, is what separates a knife that’s genuinely useful in the woods from one that just looks the part.
